IHAD is a United Way Supported Agency

The Importance of a Shadow

“I Have a Dream”® Foundation of Boulder County’s low-income students will
participate in job-shadowing days throughout the month of February.

Move over, Phil—groundhogs don’t have the only important shadows in February.

This year, students at the “I Have a Dream”® Foundation of Boulder County (IHAD) will have the opportunity to job shadow a variety of professions in the Boulder County area throughout the month of February.

IHAD, a school drop-out prevention program for disadvantaged youth, uses academic support programs, long-term mentoring relationships and the guarantee of a tuition-assistance scholarship to help children achieve their dreams.

Two professionals will talk to Dreamers about their careers at 3:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 4 at Angevine Middle School in Lafayette. One is a translator at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Denver, and the other is a police officer at the Lafayette Police Department. From 3 to 4 p.m. Friday afternoon, the Dreamers at Alicia Sanchez Elementary School in Lafayette will visit the Boulder Municipal Airport to learn more about aviation services.

Additional job shadowing opportunities throughout the month include visits to a dentist, chiropractor, florist, artist, veterinarian, journalist and the fire department.

"Job shadowing is important because it allows the students an opportunity to explore career fields that they may never have imagined,” said Chief Executive Officer Lori Canova. “This gives the students a goal to strive for throughout their academic career.”
