We know there are many decisions to be made when making estate or financial plans. By designating a gift to "I Have a Dream" in those plans, you can Leave a Legacy that helps support a program dedicated to improving the lives of the low-income youth in Boulder County.
What is a Charitable Bequest?
A bequest is a gift you make to the “I Have a Dream” Foundation of Boulder County through your will, which indicates your desire to leave something of value toward the “I Have a Dream” Foundation of Boulder County’s future work. A charitable bequest can be a specific dollar amount or a percentage of the value of your total estate, a gift of stock or life insurance or even real estate.
This thoughtful method of gifting can be created as simply as adding a paragraph to a will.
If you own appreciated securities (stocks, bonds or mutual funds held by you for more than one year), donating them to “I Have a Dream” may allow you to reduce or avoid more capital gains taxes and receive a federal income tax charitable deduction. You can also designate our organization as the beneficiary of your securities. This type of gift can be especially appealing if you are holding shares that have appreciated significantly in value but yield a low dividend.
Similarly, if you have excess life insurance, you may enjoy tax benefits by designating “I Have a Dream” as the beneficiary (primary or secondary) of an existing life insurance policy.
At the time of death, qualified retirement plan assets may be subjected to both estate and deferred income tax, which combined can use up most of the funds. You can designate “I Have a Dream” as a tax-free beneficiary of the remainder of your IRA, Keogh, tax-sheltered annuity, qualified pension or profit-sharing plan. A charitable gift of insurance proceeds or the remainder of retirement plan is normally deductible from the donor’s estate.
We welcome gifts of all shapes and sizes. The spirit behind every gift is the same.
