This year IHAD will serve 361 Dreamers and their families
- a total of over 500 individuals in eight classes:
Boulder Class of 1998, Class Sponsors Bob and Diane Greenlee
The first class of Dreamers was adopted in 1990 from a low-income housing
development (San Juan Del Centro through the Family Learning Center) in
the City of Boulder. The impact of our program on this first group of
36 Dreamers was significant - the high school graduation rate for these
children more than doubled the expected rate. Of those who graduated,
over 80% went on to post-secondary school programs with scholarship money
provided by IHAD.
Lafayette Class of 2000, Class Sponsors Bruce Holland
and Dianne Ladd
In 1992, the second class of 79 Dreamers was adopted from a pool of fourth
graders eligible for the free or reduced school lunch program at three
Lafayette elementary schools. Over 80% of these Dreamers graduated on
time and of those graduates, 90% have enrolled in college or vocational
school.
Kalmia Class of 2008, Class Sponsor Midge Korzcak
The Kalmia Dreamer Class was adopted in 1996 through a partnership with
the City of Boulder Housing Authority and the University of Colorado at
Boulder. The 32 Kalmia Dreamers, currently sixth through tenth graders,
are residents of three low-income public housing sites (Kalmia, Iris/Hawthorne
and Diagonal Court).
Broadway Class of 2009, Class Sponsors Linda Shoemaker
and Steve Brett
In 1999, with the assistance of a Department of Education GEAR UP grant,
a fourth group of Dreamers was adopted. This class is comprised of 41
children (4rd - 8th grade) from four City of Boulder low-income public
housing sites (Broadway, Kalmia, Iris/Hawthorne, and Diagonal Court).
This class is a partnership with City of Boulder Housing Authority, University
of Colorado at Boulder and the Boulder Valley School District.
Pioneer Class of 2011, Class Sponsors Paul and Brenda Lilly (Lilly Family
Foundation)
The fifth class of 37 second grade Dreamers on the free or reduced school
lunch program was added in the fall of 2000 from Pioneer Elementary School
in Lafayette.
Longmont Class of 2013, Class Sponsor Debra Lane
and Donald and Susan Sturm (The Sturm Family Foundation)
In 2000, IHAD expanded its programming to 49 new Dreamers from the Boulder
County Housing Authority's Casa de la Esperanza low-income housing site
in Longmont. These Dreamers are Kindergarten through 9th grade.
Sanchez Class of 2012, Class Sponsors Dee & Tom
Perry and Wilma & Mike Ormsbee
In 2001, the seventh class of Dreamers was adopted from Sanchez Elementary
School. Up to 50 second graders on the free or reduced lunch program comprise
this new Lafayette class.
Columbine Class of 2012, Class Sponsor Catherine
Smead
The eighth class of 50 Dreamers on the free or reduced lunch program was
adopted in February of 2002 from the second grade class at Columbine Elementary
School in Longmont.
The IHAD program exists because of the generosity of
people in the community who donate their time and financial support. Funds
for the post-secondary scholarships for all 361 Dreamers were provided
by Class Sponsors and have been placed in trust for the Dreamers. With
our volunteer tutoring and mentoring programs, kids in the program develop
ongoing, personal relationships and comprehensive support that really
makes a difference in their lives. Without this support, it would be very
difficult for them to achieve their goals.
